What is PayItGreen?

PayItGreen is a partnership between financial institutions, financial industry service providers, and businesses of all sizes. PayItGreen is committed to educating consumers and businesses about the positive environmental impacts of choosing electronic payments, bills, and statements over paper. By choosing electronic payments, the amount of paper in circulation can be significantly reduced—which benefits the environment. PayItGreen encourages consumers to turn off the paper in their financial lives - specifically, to use Direct Deposit, receive bills and financial statements electronically, and make payments electronically.

PayItGreen’s educational and outreach efforts are supported by PayItGreen member fees.

What should companies do to green up their payments systems?

Companies should choose electronic payments, eBills and statements over paper to save trees and avoid the release of greenhouse gases and wastewater. Businesses and consumers can also increase financial savings by getting paid and paying bills electronically.

  • Businesses should offer Direct Deposit for payroll, pension, travel reimbursements and bonuses. Promote 100 percent participation in the Direct Deposit program, and offer employees split Direct Deposit into two or more accounts to help them increase their financial savings.
  • Ask your bank or payment processor how to start paying your vendors electronically. Most B2B payments can be processed electronically.
  • Encourage your customers to pay their bills electronically and choose to receive eBills and electronic notices and statements.
